Fire the Indiana Democratic Party Leadership!

For those of you who read this blog, this is probably going to be a snooze, but I need to address something that needs tended to in my home state.  Despite regaining a Senate seat and the Superintendent of Public Instruction (but losing the Governor's mansion again), the leadership of the Indiana Democratic Party needs to be fired immediately.

Joe Donnelly was damn lucky.  He was campaigning against Richard Mourdoch who made comments divorced of sanity let alone political expediency   If Mourdoch and the Tea Party had not defeated Richard Lugar in the primary, we would be congratulating Lugar on re-election.  I am a dyed in the wool Democrat, but I would have voted for Lugar. Since both Donnelly and Lugar are not pro-LGBT issues, I was in a lose-lose situation anyway, and in that hypothetical, I would have chosen Lugar's seniority over Donnelly.

The Indiana Democratic Party has been a failure for years.  They have been coasting on the somewhat success of Joe Andrew, who was chair of the party from 1995-1999 and eventually an unsuccessful term as head of Democratic National Committee, but frankly, the kudos of Democratic success falls at the feet of one Evan Bayh, who took the pedigree of his father, Senator Birch Bayh, to be elected Secretary of State in 1986, then two term governor, and then Senator in 1999.  Again, this was a spin of the wheel of genetic fortune.  A young, handsome man who was bred for politics, and he happened to be a Democrat in a state full of Republicans.  Frank O'Bannon benefited from the glow of Bayh (and bad Republican candidates) to win the Governor's office twice, only to die in office, but by then, things were going downhill enough in the state, that a truly qualified man, Joe Kernan, was not able to win election against Mitch Daniels.  Throw in the inability to beat Dan Coats in 2011, a former Senator who hadn't even lived in Indiana since he retired in 1999 AND had been a lobbyist in the interim, there is obvious proof that the party "structure" has no structure at all.

Of course, these are the big tickets.  They get the most coverage, and they allow for the aforementioned "luck" to happen most often.  It is the down ticket races that are the most damning to the leadership.  Granted, they could foist the blame off on the county parties, but without some sort of plan from the mothership, we end up, well, where we are now.  Mike Pence has been elected Governor.  This is bad for anyone who isn't a white, heterosexual male.  He is an arch-conservative who will declare a culture war like none have seen - women (specifically women's health), minorities, and the LGBT community will be in the line of fire.  However, not only have we handed him the Governor's mansion, we have also handed him a legislature with a Republican super-majority in both the House and Senate.  That's right.  The Democrats do not even need to show up for votes, because the Republicans will be able to pass anything they want, and as they have proven in Right to Work and banning all funding to Planned Parenthood, they are not above passing laws that are blatantly unconstitutional.  This will get worse.  Want to amend the constitution against gay marriage?  Done (with a popular vote)! Want to pass a law that mirrors Arizona's policy on immigrants?  Done! Any cockamamie idea that can go through will probably do so. This is a DISASTER!

How did this happen?  Simple.  What has the Indiana Democratic Party done to recruit new candidates?  Absolutely nothing.  They sit back and hope someone will step up, but unfortunately, this just does not happen.  The fact that Joe Hogsett is being whispered as a candidate for mayor of Indianapolis, when he has pretty much lost every office he has run for, just shows that there is no bench in Indiana Democratic politics. Where is the fresh blood?  There should be individuals in every single county being groomed to run for these offices.  No matter how the district is gerrymandered, there should never be an instance where a Republican candidate runs unopposed, but it happens all the time in the legislative races.  The fact remains if we had managed to defeat Mike Pence, what would John Gregg have been able to do with a super-majority?  The mind boggles.

This lack of foresight and inability to build a strong party has led to complete and utter defeat.   I've always said that to be a Democrat in Indiana is to be a Republican, and with the advent of the Tea Party, the Democrats had a real opportunity to stake out a place in the middle of the road. Yes, Hoosiers tend to be pretty conservative, but there is also a pretty wide swath of common sense thrown into the mix.  The defeat of Mourdock is a prime example of this.  Unfortunately, the Indiana Democratic Party sat back and squandered this chance.  It is time to gut the party apparatus and start over.  Someone needs to come in with a plan to take back the Indiana legislature, and it will have be done in the current districts.  We need to find and groom new talent to run for offices statewide.  We need to build a grass roots, blue collar army of people to get out the vote.  Heck, bring in someone from Obama for America, at least they were able to turn Indiana blue in 2008.  Continuing what we are doing is not an option.  The Indiana Democratic Party has failed.

Tuesday, December 30th - Children of the Corncobs

I'm frantically cleaning my pit of an apartment today, but I thought I'd give you this.  Only in Indiana...

DELPHI, Ind. — Firefighters expect a 17,000-ton mountain of corncobs that caught fire over the weekend near Delphi to keep smoldering for days.

Flames were spotted early Saturday coming from the 10-story-tall pile at The Andersons cob mill and grain operations. Carroll County emergency management director Dave McDowell says while rainfall Saturday night put out the worst of the fire, crews continued to battle hot spots.

McDowell said that seven fire departments responded with more than 150 firefighters to the scene Saturday.

A cause wasn’t immediately known for the fire at the site about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette. The corncobs are processed at the mill into animal feed, bedding and other uses.

November 23rd - Idiot Indiana

I haven't done an Idiot Indiana post in a while (in fact, I didn't even have a lable for it), but I couldn't let this story get by. It is from INtake, the "hip" arm of the local Indianapolis Star:

Porn stars do battle on court TV
by Konrad.Marshall

A nudist and two porn stars walk into a courtroom …

It sounds like the first line of a bad joke, but that's exactly what happened recently in Chicago, when porn legend Ron Jeremy and Hoosier nudist Scarlett Schmitt set foot in the TV courtroom of Judge Jeanine Pirro, ready to sue "adult entertainer" Audrey Moore for breach of contract.

Schmitt, the owner of Ponderosa Sun Club -- a nudist resort in Roselawn, Ind. -- joined forces with Jeremy, a long-time friend, claiming Moore reneged on an oral agreement to host the annual "Nudes-A-Poppin" event at the resort this summer. Jeremy himself is a regular Nudes-A-Poppin emcee.

The case is due to air at 3 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 20) on the CW Network (WTTV 4), in the series "Judge Jeanine Pirro" (right after "Judge Karen", "Judge Mathis" and "The People's Court"). Pirro is a former district attorney and judge from upstate New York who made a failed run as the Republican nominee for New York State Attorney General in 2006. Her show is the latest to follow the format made popular by Judge Judy Sheindlin.

Nudes-A-Poppin, meanwhile, began at Ponderosa decades ago as a private pageant and party for club members. But it has evolved over the years into a festival drawing more than 5,000 spectators. A crew from Playboy Channel visited in July, filming the raunchy weekend for the television series "69 Sexiest Things to Do Before You Die," and the event has been featured also by HBO's "Real Sex," Askmen.com and Stuff magazine among others.

The plaintiffs, Jeremy and Schmitt, said Moore cost the festival money because of promotion and advertising material that featured Moore. Ponderosa also had to deal with refunds to individuals who wanted their money back because of Moore's no-show. (Personalized photos and autographs with the "stars" were a large part of the festival this year.)

But according to a press release, Moore said she was so nervous at the prospect of co-hosting the event with the esteemed Jeremy -- as well as Blues Traveler front man John Popper -- that she drank too much and missed her flight, thereby violating the accord.

Moore also claims she doesn't owe anything because the show went on with a replacement who was in fact better known than her -- porn star and Hustler model Jessica Jaymes.

Moore, though, should perhaps not sell herself short. After all, at previous Nudes-A-Poppin events she has taken home Miss Petite Nude North America 2005, Couples Nude Go-Go contest winner 2005, Miss Nude Go-Go contender 2005, Miss Nude North America contender 2005, Miss Nude North America contender 2006 and Miss Hot Legs 2007. And those victories led to camera time in features like "Buttman's Nudes a Poppin '19", the AVN award-winning "Buttman's Nudes a Poppin '20", and "Buttman's Nudes a Poppin 21."

Whatever the Pirro's verdict, it is hard to imagine that Jeremy, Schmitt and Moore didn't make up after the hearing. The dominant photo of Moore's MySpace page -- where the actress is listed as 25-year-old from Dayton, Ohio, also known as "Nikki Nine" -- is a shot of her with Jeremy.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 - That Had to Hurt, Bob

While watching the news yesterday, I was reminded again why I chose the title for this blog to be "I may be from Indiana, but I am NOT an Idiot..." You see, while I am sure every state has its weirdos, rednecks, and/or uneducated people, it just never seems to fail that these Hoosiers are the ones to make the news. From the two teeth, trailer trash who go hit by a tornado to the drunk man who got caught stuck in the chimney and whose former girlfriend proceeded to physically assault him on camera:

Scary, right? That video is from Evansville, which is in the southern part of the state, and I have always found solace in my contention that anything south of downtown Indianapolis might as well be a part of Kentucky. Unfortunately, the story I am about to detail happened north of Indy, in Kokomo, which is close to my hometown of Logansport.

Derrick Kosch entered a Village Pantry on Tuesday morning waving a semiautomatic pistol. He proceeded to demand all the money AND a pack of cigarettes. (why not a carton?) While the cashier met his demands, she heard the gun discharge. Apparently, Derrick, thinking he's a gangsta pimp, slid the gun into the waistband of his pants WITHOUT THE SAFETY ON, and he proceeded to shoot off his right testicle (OUCH). Obviously the height of brilliance, he limped off to lick his wounds (pun intended). When the cops found him, he said that somebody shot him, even though he didn't make an attempt to go to the hospital and his face was on surveillance tape.

This my friends IS an idiot. Too bad he didn't shoot both of them off to spare us any of his progeny.
