The Sound (and the Fury) of Carrie

Before we begin, I have to admit that I only watched the first 5 minutes or so, about to the time Maria sang "The Sound of Music," and via social media commentary, I was able to get back in time to hear Mother Abbess sing, "Climb Every Mountain."  So, my experience with the show itself is limited, but being a fan of musical theater and watching my theater friends both defend and decimate the show on Facebook, I feel that I can at least make a pretty good commentary on the whole thing.

First off, I am not one of those people that abhor remakes.  If the creative talent behind it are doing it for the right reasons, like they are going back to the source material or have a unique hook to do so, then I am all for revisiting classics. My philosophy is that no matter what the remake accomplishes, no one is taking away from me the original song, television show, or movie.  I can still go back and revisit my preferred one.  Of course, Broadway is another animal, which rarely has video records of classic productions, but for me, that gives Broadway an air of exclusivity, that is a motivator for me to see live theater.

The cool thing about Broadway productions is that revivals are celebrated.  From The Iceman Cometh and Death of a Salesman to Cabaret and, yes, The Sound of Music, all of these shows have seen multiple revivals and re-interpretations, and for the most part, the stage community does not bat an eye.  The general public however can get stuck on the "classics," and I knew right away that many people would not be able to to separate the stage production of "The Sound of Music" from the classic movie adaptation.  The fact is that the movie is indeed an adaptation with songs moved around and in different locations, and no matter how much NBC and the producers bloviated, there were always going to be people that would compare Carrie Underwood to Julie Andrews -- unfairly, I might add.

However, a friend of mine on Facebook, who happens to be a classically trained vocalist, posted , "when someone asks me to perform hip hop, I will respectfully say no. So, when a half-ass, country singer is asked to do a great classic musical, she should respectfully say no as well." It made me think. Snarky comment about Ms. Underwood aside, what would motivate someone, who has negligible acting experience, to tackle one of the classic roles in musical theater?  Putting aside the trite idea of broadening oneself, Underwood really has nothing to prove.  We all know she can sing, but it was clearly obvious to me from the way she woodenly speaks in interviews that acting was not going to be her forte.  It is actually OK for her to just be a multiplatinum, multimillionaire pop country artist.  No shame in that game at all.

Ultimately, I do not blame Carrie Underwood, but the fault falls squarely on the producers, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, who should really know better.   They cut their television musical teeth on Gypsy with Bette Midler, Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney Houston, and Annie with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber.  What do all these have in common?  Veteran stage actors and/or actors with singing ability.  I get that they were trying to attract "Joe Six-Pack" to watch, but to self-consciously make the stunt casting of someone with the vocal chops but zero acting ability and then to surround her with multiple Tony award winners like Audra McDonald, Laura Benati, and Christian Borle, it just did a disservice to their overall production.

I do believe it is a good thing to bring musical theater to the masses again.  So, the fact that we are even discussing it makes this a net positive.  However, if Meron and Zadan decide to do something like this again, I hope they have the guts to make the choice of someone with stage or, at least, acting ability to be the crux of their production. I understand that in the current media landscape you have to have a hook, but I wager that ratings would have been high merely on the strength of it being The Sound of Music.  They did not need to make cynical stunt casting and throw Carrie Underwood under the bus just to get higher ratings.

Wednesday, April 16th - Frustration Level Rising

Well, I woke up this morning, refreshed because I had gone to bed at 10:30, and I had planned on coming into work early, because this is a designated gym skip day on my new workout. Then, after hitting snooze, I had the horrible realization that I had forgotten to make my breakfast and lunch for work today, which was part of the reason I got to go to bed early! Argh! So, I had to quickly make all of that, feed the cat, and get ready to go to work.

I got into work at 6:30, and I wanted to install a new printer in the classroom before the teacher got there. It should have been a cinch, the emphasis on "should." Two and half hours later, I was still working on it.

Now the web server is down, and I have a very long day ahead of me.

On top of it all, I took notes during Idol last night, and I left those at home! So, I won't be doing a break down today. I will say that the guys pretty much destroyed the girls on Mariah night, with David Cook owning everyone, and I think Carly and Brook will be in the bottom two. I hazard to guess who will go home, but I would imagine that Brook may be the one.

Grumble...

It's 10:00..and I want a rum and coke. Hmmm...maybe I need to run home ;)

Tuesday, April 15th - Deadline Day

I won't be doing a full blown post today because I am on a deadline for my final quarterly report. Thank Gods! So, I'm just going to do some quick bullets of what is going through my mind right now.
  • Politics: How interesting that the latest Survey USA poll for Indiana shows Hillary with a 16 point lead over Obama? The trend all this cycle has been a wide margin by Clinton getting slowly whittled away as we draw closer to the primary date. Granted, there is still three weeks to go, and once Pennsylvania is out of the way next week, everything will be ramped up. However, Obama has been running commercials incessantly for two weeks now. Could it be that it has been overkill for a state that has barely seen any presidential commercials for 40 years? A troubling thing for Obama should be that Hillary went from 13 points behind in Indianapolis, to 1 point ahead. This is significant because the 7th District, which compromises most of Indy, went for John Kerry in 2004. I figured this would be a slam dunk for him, and he would make up some of the delegate math if Hillary still won the state. Obviously, a lot can happen, but it is certainly interesting! (Survey USA has been the most reliable polling firm this cycle, so while there is still no real baseline in Indiana, this is at least a quality snapshot)
  • American Idol: Does anyone else think that an all Mariah Carey show is going to be hell on earth?
  • Battlestar Galactica: Since I finally got to watch Friday's episode last night, I am still basking in the glow of how great this s how is. I am so sad that there are only 18 more episodes left. However, since the Cylon stuff was a bit more interesting than the rest, it made me intrigued with the notion of a movie or mini-series telling the same story from the point of view of the Cylons. It might just be a geek-gasm on my part, but I think it could be pretty darn great.
  • Fitness: Day two of the new workout kicked my ass, or rather, my arms, and this was with taking down the weight so that I could do all the sets and required reps. The good think about this routine is that they don't give me a range. In my old one, each exercise gave something like 6-10 reps, and I would alway shoot for 8. In this one, I have to do all 10 or 12. It means I have to check my ego a little because I like the fact I can use the big boy weights. Ah well, it'll be worth it.
I hope everyone has a great day!

Tuesday, April 9th - American Idol - The Top 8

I know. I committed some sort of gay heresy for skipping Dolly week last week, but I was so swamped with other things (re: drinking and meetings..often at the same time), I wasn't able to properly take notes and write out my opinions. So, this week, I sat down with my pad of paper ready for "Inspiration Week," which in the end pretty much lacked any of the theme. I'll be the first to admit that treacly ballads are not my cup of tea. Sure, I enjoy them on occasion, but if you're as frequent of a karaoke goer as I am, you learn to despise the the belters, some who actually can do it well and cause a pearl clutching moments or, more often than not, those who really can't that cause a bathroom break. I wrote about this on the Mean Girls blog in December. Check it out!

Anyway, onto the rankings. The sad thing is that when Kristi Lee Cook registers better than Carly Smithson, you know it's been a bad week. I voted for Carly tonight because I think she deserves to stay around, but I think she's in trouble on Thursday.

The Top 3
  1. Michael Johns - I'm with Paula on this one. I though Aerosmith's "Dream On" was a good choice for him. I am still not sold on his chances to win it all, but I thought he did a good job tonight. He did have pitch problems, and the falsetto at the end just seemed like a weak attempt to immitate Steven Tyler. He doesn't gird my loins like I know he does some people, but he at least deserves to stay around a few more weeks.
  2. David Archuleta - I wouldn't say I was knocked over by his performance of Robbie William's "Angels", but it was pretty good. I really didn't expect any less because he has excelled at the big ballads. I don't think he is commercial enough to excel in the current music industry. If he wins, he could be the second coming of Taylor Hicks, but considering there are still girls ready to throw their training bras at the stage, he could end up winning.
  3. Kristi Lee Cook - It pains me to place her here, but her rendition of Martina McBride's "Anyway" was pretty darn good. Of course, it was the return of Wide Stance Kristi, but she kept her voice under control, and where better singers have been tossed around by McBride, she did a good job. Blah...
The Meh-iddle
  • David Cook - Bad Song Choice! I don't care if Our Lady Peace is your favorite band. The song "Innocent" just didn't translate well to the shortened Idol format. I'm also getting a bit tired of his overuse of rocker cliches. He doesn't need to hold onto the mike stand every song. I still believe he has the power to win this thing, but he needs to tone it down and pick good songs. Everyone has a bad week and he has no threat to going home, but he needs to not make it a habit.
  • Jason Castro - If I had my druthers, he would be in the bottom and/or firmly ensconced at home by now. He simply cannot do anything else other than sit there with his guitar (or ukelele) and strum like some street musician. I get that he's cute, and the little girls love him. However, does anyone really think he is the next American Idol? His rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was merely okay, and I wrote "puke" in my notes. Which I think is enough said...
  • Brook White - The only reason I didn't put her in the bottom two is because she went last. She didn't do a horrible job on Carole King's "You Got a Friend," but it wasn't exactly earth shattering. She's really lost her way in this competition, and I hope she gets it back.
The Bottom 2
  • Carly Smithson - I hate typing this, but even though I enjoyed her rendition of Queen's "The Show Must Go On," I do agree that it was a bit thudding and oppressive for an inspirational night. Her voice still amazes me, but I think she is in real jeopardy. Once again, during her performance, I caught colors of Grace Slick, and I really want her to have a chance to possibily sing some of her. I voted. I hope she stays around.
  • Syesha Mercado - Gurl, please. You need to stop picking songs that are iconically connected with a certain artist. After being nearly swallowed by Dolly/Whitney's version of "I Will Always Love You" last week, she goes and picks "I Believe," the song that Fantasia sang when she one American Idol, and she sang it with all the emotional connection of singing the phone book. She was technically sound, but she was also irritating with her shock that Randy would think about comparing her to Fantasia. That get's another...Gurl, Please!
All in all, it was a meh night. Tonight they are doing another version of Idol Give's Back, and then they will have the results show on Thursday. I'm not sure yet if I'll blog about the show tonight, we'll see.

Thursday, March 27th - Nothing to See Here

I don't really have much to report from yesterday. It has been slow at work, but that will all change on Tuesday when I have monthly and quarterly reports to deal with. I did take the opportunity to clean my office, well, to at least get rid of the excess clutter. My office will never be clean in the traditional sense because I am stuck with some of the IT storage in here, but at least I can now see my desk.

I think my little modification in my diet may do the trick. It was pretty simple to do, and I feel stupid for not thinking of it earlier. I just ended up feeling a bit more hungry than I have been, which could lead to splurging, but I think I'll be able to figure out a way to alleviate that. I still have a way to go before I make my run for The Mean Girls Biggest Loser, but I fully intend to be a contender.

I've blogged about my improved financial status recently, and since I am settling into the VERY good feeling of not living paycheck to paycheck, I am contemplating switching banks, which is kind of scary with all the changes I'll need to make for direct deposits and autopayments. I'm lucking out and getting more money than I had intended from the St. Patrick's Day folks for doing their website. So, I am going to use that money to setup a brokerage account at Charles Schwab, and then I will setup their high interest rate checking account. I figure opening it with that money, and then getting everything switched over will alleviate any headaches. It also helps that my sister works for Schwab, so I get treated to some of the employee level benefits for being immediate family. The cool thing about the checking account is that on top of the 3% interest rate (which is actually a billion times better than my current savings account) they also charge no ATM fees and reimburse you on the fees you incur at other ATMs. For someone who never really carries around cash and is extremely stingy with paying ATM fees, this is a pretty awesome option. Plus, when I'm ready to make some investments later on in the year, I will already have the brokerage account ready to go. I think it's a good move, and if anyone out there already has a Schwab account, I would be interested in hearing any feedback.

Finally, American Idol. I got two of the three bottom dwellers right, and I am just all the more annoyed at the little girls for coddling Ramiele. She is this season's Sanjaya! While Chikeze had a rough night on Tuesday, he has shown a lot more talent that her. Ugh...this is where I get annoyed at having both her and Kristie Lee still around.

American Idol - The Top 10 - Live Blog

Since my plans fell through for the night, I decided I would play a little Super Smash Brothers Brawl, then crack open a Beck's Premier Light (1 point on the Weight Watchers scale!), and live blog American Idol. It's not like I have enough traffic to really prove a point with this, but hey, it'll give me a headstart on tomorrow.

My two favorite contestants (David Hernandez and Amanda Overmeyer) have been given the boot. So, I am not beholden to anybody. Since I will be doing this (almost) live, I will just type out my thoughts, and then I will place them in order at the end. I am starting about 21 minutes behind on the East Coast. So, obviously, if you're in a different time zone, you're going to get spoilers, but hey, not my problem.

Here we go....this will be stream of consciousness
  • Here comes Gaycreast. I do find him a bit attractive, except when he talks. So, obviously, this is not going to win him any points with me.
  • What the hell is Paula wearing! It looks like something out of Sally Bowles' closet.
  • Tonight's theme is the year they were born...so, um...boy
  • Ramiele is up first. Yes, you are damn lucky you made it to the top 10. On nooooo, she didn't! Heart's Alone! Why Why Why! She has a big voice, maybe she can pull it off, but again, why pick something that was done so "well" by Carrie Underwood and Carly Smithson, this season. Okay, she DESTROYED the high notes, and she looks like she's wearing Kulots, with hooker boots. That was TERRIBLE!
  • Randy made sense, for once. Paula was feckless, again! And Simon basically said, it was bad, but since last week was horrible and she's still here, then she's going to make it through.
  • Commercial
  • Oh goody. My favorite...Jason Castro. Oh great, it's his birthday. Is Sting's Fragile really from 1987? He sounds like Enrique Iglesias tonight. I still say he would make a better YouTube star singing in his dorm room. It was fine tonight, but he just does the same thing week after week. I think he is going to be the one who hangs around forever, but he really has no chance of winning. THANK YOU, SIMON! It was very much like someone singing on the street.
  • Sidenote: I hate the mosh pit
  • Sayesha. Okay, enough of the baby cries, girl. Oh wow, she lived the dream of Bring It On because she was on the dance team. She's singing, "If I Was Your Woman." Wow, she really hit that one out of the park. I knew she had it in her, but she has been so inconsistent. This was a bit of a fudge because while Gladys Knight and the Pips sang it in 1971, Alicia Keys covered it last year on her Unplugged album. I just had to Google it, and Stephanie Mills covered it in 1987. Way to stretch out the meaning of birth year. Also, she needs to give style tips to the rest of the girls.
  • Commercial
  • Chikezie is singing a ballad. lol...Blanche just texted me with "Brace yourself, its been nothing but ballads all night." He's singing "If Only for One Night." I'm not sure I know this. Ah...it's Luther. That makes sense. He's doing a good job. I just don't know if he is taking a risk here. This is pretty standard balladry. Woo Hoo...Randy agreed with me. It was way too old school.
  • Commercial
  • Brooke White. She's the oldest one so far at 1983. Oh deal lord, I feel old. Good thing she actually looks older than me. She's singing The Police "Every Breathe You Take." She's at the piano again, and whoops, she messed up the beginning and restarted. I have been watching this show since the 3rd Season, and I don't remember anyone doing that. She's good, but she's done this song deconstruction before. I understand its her thing, but as she showed last week, she falters when she does something else. The point of the theme weeks is to show your versitility. Eh, it was mezzo mezzo. I like it, and she is pretty likable.
  • Dear god...another commercial, and the two oldest people, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, are up next.
  • Michael Johns. 1978...okay, I don't feel so old now. Hmm....Queen "We Will Rock You" into "We Are the Champions." I don't think I've ever seen someone do two songs either. He's doing a good job, but he did a great job on Bohemian Rhapsody, too. So, it is obvious he has an affinity for this classic, bombastic rock. (voice cracked) I dunno. What is he going to do for Dolly Parton week? It certainly woke the crowd up. So, I give him props for that.
  • Carly Smithson is up next, and I am not shocked she's a Virgo. *gasp* "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Good God, she is great. Why the hell was she in the bottom 3 last week? I desperately want her to sing some Grace Slick! She's doing better in the clothing department, but oh lord, her husband scares me. Okay, what hell, Randy? He didn't like it. Eh, okay, I can agree with Simon. It wasn't perfect, but my god, she is so much better than everyone else. I'm going to have to start voting for her.
  • Commercial Break....and the YOUNGEST is up next. David Archuleta.
  • David Archuleta - It is so creepy to have all those girls screaming for him. Especially the middle aged ones... Oh no, he has a girlfriend. Gay men across the country are weeping. He's singing Heart's "The Voice," and folks, it ain't good. Oh dear, props for trying to do something different, but it's been very pitchy and all over the place. Randy is CRAZY. That was not nice. Simon was dead on....it was very theme park. Hmmm, he alluded to the fact that David's dad is a bit of stage parent. Veddy Interesting...
  • Commercial
  • Oh yippee skippy, my absolute favorite: Carrie Underwood, Jr - Kristie Lee Cook. Why the hell is she still here? Why? Why? Why? If Carly goes home before her, I am going to be so pissed off. When she was born, her dad was a bit of DILF. Wow, she got on her parent's nerves from singing so much. I know the feeling. Oh fucking seriously...."God Bless the USA." I'm going to go barf. *pops a breath mint* Oh fuck, she's still singing. I really wish we could vote people OFF. Ugh, the worst part is that she sang it well. Damn, she'll be around next week.
  • Commercial - At least David Cook is up next.
  • David Cook - Uh wow...he's singing "Billie Jean." A bit speechless. I know Chris Cornell did a stipped down unplugged version of this, but if that is his own arrangement. He just won this thing (I was typing that before Randy said it..HA!). Seriously, when he was coming up through auditions, I had no idea he had this in him.
I know I said I would rank, but it's getting late. I get up at 5am to go to the gym. I'll do my recap tomorrow.

Wednesday, March 19th - American Idol - Top 11

A quick update on me. No, I wasn't hungover or in jail after a rowdy St. Patrick's Day. Well, I wasn't in jail. I was a bit hung over after the Bag Lady festivities on Monday night, and since Blanche, Romeo, and I all took Tuesday off, we met up for lunch and then some darts, which lead into a whole day of drinking and ended with Karaoke.

That is a story for another day, because I'm dealing with some drama in my apartment. The return of my ceiling tit!

I wanted to get a quick American Idol recap in though.

I find myself siding with Simon once again, when he said that it was a mistake to do another week of the Lennon/McCartney song book. I know they were excited to get access to it (hey, Michael Jackson needed the money!), but it was just overkill. Last week was exciting and surprising, but this week was pretty dull an uninspiring. There were a couple stand outs, and once in for all, Carrie Underwood, Jr., NEEDS TO GO!

Sidenotes: I don't recall them ever allowing the contestants to talk so much after their performances. Amanda Overmeyer and Carly Smithson practically recited the Gettysburg Address. Also, they were certainly drilling into our heads how long they have to sing. If I heard "a minute thirty" one more time, I was going to kick Carrie Underwood, Jr.

The Top 3
  1. Carly Smithson - I know everyone thinks David Archuleta has this in the bag, but my god, she has the best voice in the entire competition. Plus, the fact that she has absolute control over that voice, really makes her probably near the top, if not the top, singer the competition has ever seen. "Blackbird" is a very tough song, with octave leaps and other technical pizazz that can kill an average vocalist. Carly was fantastic. Now, if she would only let someone else dress her.
  2. Amanda Overmeyer - Okay, it was tough to find a top 3, and I can't say she had the best vocal. However, to quote Paula, she is true to herself, and for me, that was enough to vote for her multiple times. She's kind of the opposite of Carly. She's pretty much an entertainer, not a vocal stylist. The performance of "Back in the USSR" was certainly a mess, and you could almost hear the combined brainpower of the tweens across America saying, "Mom, what's the USSR?" I'm giving her props for her talk at the end of the performance, where she stated her philosophy on performing songs, and of course, she said, "Ballads Suck!" I love you, my dear. Though you're going to have to pop out a Lita Ford power ballad soon.
  3. David Cook - Once again, the word nerd turned in a muscular performance with "Day Tripper", which in some ways was better than last week. It was also interesting that he brought out a vocorder. It at least keeps things interesting. I probably wouldn't mention that I got my inspiration from Whitesnake, but different strokes, folks. Anyway, I'm starting to notice that David has a bit of an ego, which is bad for him. One bad week, and he could be toast. It's time to shake up the formula, and hopefully, the theme next week will allow him.
The Meh-iddle (no order this time)
  • David Archuleta - I know, I know. I'm supposed to bow down and worship this little tyke. I am on the wagon to the fact that he can sing, but it is going to take a lot more than standing in the middle of the stage and belting out ballad after ballad (BALLADS SUCK!) Also, the dude is 17, and I find it incredibly creepy that there looks like their are women who are pushing 30 in the mosh pit, screaming his name, and practically throwing their bra's at him.
  • Brooke White - The curse of the stairs continue. Stay away from the stairs, fools! To me, Brooke is going to get very boring pretty quickly, and tonight was a big step into the cesspool of mediocrity. She was just awkward and kind of scary, and Simon was right. You could have turned the video off, and you would have known exactly what Brook was doing and wearing. It was just too predictable.
  • Jason Castro - I've said before that I don't get his appeal...other than his dreamy eyes and face (not dreads), but this was the week where he was pretty indefensible by anyone. It was so bad, and so boring. He's lucky there are others who are much much worse.
  • Syesha Mercado - She was the most improved of the week, but "Yesterday" is certainly a safe song to choose. She gave it some vocal uniqueness, but it is still the musical equivalent of singing "Happy Birthday." Nearly everyone knows that song... Let's hope this is a confidence builder week for her, because it would be nice to have another big voice.
The Bottom 3
  • Chikezie - He committed the sin of trying to catch lighting in a bottle twice. He basically tried to repeat his amazing performance last week, and it just didn't work. It can't be a surprise twice, dawg. Plus, you're not Stevie Wonder. Leave the harmonica alone!
  • Ramiele (sorry..not bothering to look up her last name) - The fact hat I can't really remember a thing about her performance is pretty indicative of how she has disappointed me. She really does have a good voice, but she has no clue how to use it. Let's hope she doesn't fall to the fans of Carrie Underwood, Jr. She deserves one more chance to see if she can pull it together.
  • Kristi Lee Cook - The only compliment Kristi can take from the last two weeks is that a drag queen (Donna Rhea) did a version of her "8 Days A Week" at the Bag Lady show on Monday. This week was even worse, and I don't think a drag queen will even touch it. It just pissed me off because David Hernandez may not have been the best singer, but he was certainly a lot better than her. She needs to GO!

Thursday, March 13th - American Idol - Boo Hiss!

Seriously, David Hernandez may not have been the best singer in the competition, but he has more talent than that Stepford Wife automoton, Carrie Underwood Jr. *cough* Kristi Lee Cook. I wonder what Lennon/McCartney song she'll make into a square dancing hoe down next week.

*sigh*

Oh David, at least you finally wore something with short sleeves....shoulda worn this:

Wednesday, March 12th - American Idol - The Top 12

I suppose I should start off by saying that I've never been a fan of the Lennon/McCartney songbook, which probably stems from my sister being obsessed with them before she graduated to Guns N Roses, Poison, and RATT. There is only so much Beatles music a young boy can take until he just learns to hate the living hell out of it. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised with most of the performances tonight, and I am also beginning to believe the hype that this could be the most talented group we've had yet. It has taken 7 seasons, but the contestants are FINALLY realizing that they need to do more than just get up there and sing the song. I give props to those who took risks and did new takes on songs, even if they sounded like a hoedown on acid (*cough*Kristi Lee Cook*cough*)

Top 3
  1. Chikezie - Absolutely shocked. Stunned. I didn't think Mr. Smooth Jazz had it in him, but like Paula said, he took the biggest risk and got the greatest reward. Yeah, Paula was shockingly coherent most of the night. Honestly, I've never heard "She's A Woman," and I can't say even his version will be on my iPod anytime soon. However, it was a very clever arrangement. This is exactly what Chikezie needed to do, especially after he committed voter suicide on stage by saying he was "ready to go home" last week. Methinks no one is going to remember that.
  2. Carly Smithson - Not to start out like Paula, but while she looked better than she ever has, the stylist really need to get a hold of her STAT. If she'd just added some leg warmers and a belt, she could have either been black haired Tiffany or Olivia Newton John. Outside of that, she KILLED "Come Together." This was by far the toughest vocal of the night, and she hit every not dead center. She may not win this thing, but she has, by far, the best talent of the group.
  3. Amanda Overmeyer - I just love this girl because I'm pretty sure she can beat me up or at least run me over with her Harley. After showing the stage presence and happiness of the Zoloft rock last week, I was really afraid that the big stage would swallow her up, but she was obviously having a much better time this week, connecting with the camera and the audience. She had a few pitch problems, but frankly, that is sort of the way blues rockers sing. Again, I had never heard her song "You Can't Do That," but I am strongly considering buying it on iTunes today.
The Meh-iddle - (in order...different from last week)
  • Brooke White - I think she's getting too much praise for being simple. While I think her stripped down version of "Love is a Battlefield" was a revelation last week, sitting at a piano and singing "Let it Be" is about as inventive as Zamfir playing it on the pan flute. I'll admit that she sang it well, and she will be in the competition for a while. She just hasn't sold me yet.
  • David Cook - His "Eleanor Rigby" was not as good as "Hello" last week. The first 2/3 were downright shaky, but when he started to rock out on the chorus at the end, it was pretty fantastic. He really needs to avoid the moldy rock inflections though. I wish I could type them out, but I know you know what I'm talking about. (I hope)
  • Ramiele Malubay - Yes, this was absolutely safe, but her rendition of my absolute favorite Beatles song "In My Life" was melodic and beautiful. I was frankly surprised the judges killed her so much. Of course, she went right after Chikezie, but give the girl a break. Plus, she gets props for confessing that she is a stereotype working at a Sushi bar.
  • David Archuleta - Uh...does the emperor have no clothes? His version of "We Can Work It Out" was an absolute mess from the very beginning, and I really expected more state presence on the big stage from someone who has won Star Search. I get the fact that this may not be his comfort zone for music, but it was so bad, dawg. Sure, he's cute as a button and has talent to spare, but he's going to have to show more versatility outside of the funeral dirge ballads to win.
  • Jason Castro - This is another bus I'm not joining. Simon hit the nail on the head when he said it seemed like a guy with a guitar in a dorm. Indeed, you can go on YouTube and find millions of videos of people who sing better than Jason Castro. Yeah, his self-deprecation is pretty charming, but he is such a one trick pony that I am ready for him to leave.
  • David Hernandez - I think you're gorgeous, man, but your rendition of "I Saw Her Standing There" was so manic, I was a little afraid you might slide right off the stage into the mosh pit (btw, HATE the mosh pit). Tone it down, girlfriend, and really, you need to wear less clothes.
The Bottom 3
  • Michael Johns - BORING! Across the Universe is a great song if sung well, but alas, it wasn't. Sorry dude, you're not going to get through this on looks and your accent. You could eek by and push David Hernandez down here, but I'm thinking you might be in for a shock.
  • Syesha Mercado - Her deadliest sin was that she was forgettable, and she went first. So, I think she is guaranteed a spot in the bottom 3, and I would not be shocked if she went home. "Got To Get You Into My Life" is a great song, but I think it was a little outside of her talent level. I think Carly Smithson would have killed it though.
  • Kristi Lee Cook - Oh dear, Carrie Underwood Jr. imploded this week under the weight of a contryfied/craptastic rendition of "8 Days a Week." Miss Widestance was an absolute train wreck, and if there is a god, she will be going home tonight. She is an OK singer, but she is so out of her depth here. I do not want to see her sliding by on her looks, taking the place of more deserving people.
Well, there you have my opinion folks. What did you think?

Friday, March 7th - Friday Potpourri

This has been a pretty eventful/uneventful week for me. Yeah, I realize that is kind of a fractured idea, but is the truth:

The highlights: Hillary staging a comeback of epic proportions; getting to ride my bike and getting back to the gym (finally); deciding to review American Idol; participating in verbal fisticuffs with Obamaniacs on MyDD and other places.

The lowlights: Most of my evenings were spent on the couch watching TV. Now that I am much more financially stable, it is time for me to get out and do some things I've put off for a while. I really want to take an Art Class, preferably something that has the possibility of doing bodily harm to me like glass blowing. lol

Onto the bullets:
  • American Idol: Even though I was loath to make actual predictions of who would be eliminated, I am happy to say that 3 of the 4 in my bottom 2 for the guys and gals were sent packing. Thankfully, my stripper boy was not the surprise of the night, it was Asia'h Epperson, and I was truly a bit upset that she got the boot. She was not the best singer of the group, but there is something to be said for middling vocals but amazing stage presence. Kristy Lee Cook just kinda stands there, legs spread, and sings. She is truly Carrie Underwood, Jr....ugh, here's to hoping she gone in the first two weeks.
  • Money, Money, Money: I've mentioned before that I was approaching the final goal of paying off all my accumulated credit card debt, and I am happy to say that all the money has finally changed hands and registered in the various accounts. It was SO gratifying to log in and see the big $0.00 balance on those final two cards. I will not say just how much debt I was into, but seeing as it took me nearly 4 years of stifling bi-weekly payments, you can probably do the math. I take full responsibility for living outside of means when I first went out on my own, but considering how bad the economy has become, this level of debt is unfortunately possible for anyone, even to make ends meet, and if you're having issues with it, I really do encourage you to stop paying those minimums and get on a plan to pay them off. It is really like a weight has been lifted from me, and while I still have student loans, a trip to Vegas, and a computer to pay off, it just feels so good to not have those high interest rates hanging over my head.
  • Politics: Both Blanche and I have been feeling the Primary Fatigue that has set in, which is actually rather amazing when you consider this has really only been going on for a little over two months. At least we have a bit of a break until another big state with Pennsylvania on April 22nd, and then they're off to North Carolina, Indiana (WOO HOO!), and Kentucky. It has been 40 years since Bobby Kennedy campaigned in Indiana for the Democratic Primary, and it has been 44 years since Indiana has gone Democratic in a Presidential Election. So, I will enjoy this primary, but the chances of my vote really counting (as far as the Electoral College goes) in November is pretty slim. My closing political musing is that Obama really needs to get his people under control. Between the NAFTA kerfluffle, Susan Rice (foreign policy adviser for Obama) saying that NEITHER Obama or Hillary are ready to answer the White House phone at 3am, and now, Samantha Power (another foreign policy adviser) calling Hillary a "Monster" in an Irish newspaper, he is starting to look like his campaign is in major disarray. This is not the way to prove false the meme that you are not ready for prime time.
Finally, I wanted to share with you guys some stuff from when I was in DC for the general election in 1996. I interned with the Democratic National Committee in the research department (yes, the source of opposition/negative research), and since we won in 1996, I was afforded some amazing opportunities, like going to the election night party at the Capital Hilton and the party on the White House lawn the next day to welcome Bill, Hill, Al, and Tipper back home. I just found these, and I decided to scan them in for posterity. Also, I have a news clipping from The Washington Post, that shows a blurry version of me out in the audience smack dab between Bill and Al. Yes it is me, though I obviously had more hair at that time. :-)

Thursday, March 6th - American Idol - The Gals

Wednesday night is Reality TV night for me with American Idol, America's Next Top Model (my guilty pleasure), and Project Runway. Since I got a great response from my Idol review yesterday, I've decided to make it a regular feature. I'm not sure yet if I'll do the same for ANTM, and since Project Runway just ended last night, I may just comment on that in another post. Top Chef does start next week, but I haven't gotten as interested in it as I have with Runway, despite my deep-seeded desire to be a chef/baker.

And don't worry, I'm not getting away from my political entries or general musings, I'll still be doing those! As I approach my 200th (!) entry, I am pretty surprised with just how much I have to say.

As a whole, the girls were not as good as the guys this week. There was just an overall "blah" feeling during the whole hour, with too many ballads or renditions of songs that would make a karaoke bar erupt with clapping and pearl clutching but are not worthy of American Idol. It is surprising that in the 7th season of Idol the contestants STILL don't get that you win points for making the song your own. It's like the idiots who get on Survivor but still do not know how to make fire. If I knew I were going on that show, you can bet I'd be contacting a local survivalist to show me how to make fire out of water. It is just amazing that we've become a culture that wants its 15 minutes of fame on TV and the kids today watch vociferously, but then when they finally get the chance they blow it by trying to impersonate the singer who made the song famous.

Anyway, off the soapbox! Oh, also, the judges seemed to be on crack last night. I guess Paula must have brought extra to share.

Top 3
  1. Brook White - Trust me, I'm more surprised than you that she was number 1 last night. I kind of feel the same way about her as I do David Archuleta. She, of the "never seen a rated R movie," is just so damn earnest. I sort of want her to get to Hollywood and have some sort of lesbian sex scandal. Also, she looks like she's 44 not 24, but hey, it must be hard living the pious life. When Ryan announced she was singing Pat Benatar, I almost hissed at the TV. There's just no way she could sing the song like Pat, and she didn't, which is why the song worked so well. Just like David Cook on Tuesday, she's smart enough to make the song work for her and her vocal stylings. It was pretty fantastic. I cannot say she has the chutzpah to win it all, but she gets points from me for originality.
  2. Carly Smithson - Her rendition of Celine Dion singing Cyndi Lauper's "I Drove All Night" was actually the best vocal of the night, but the reason Brook beat her out was because there was absolutely nothing original about the performance. Don't get me wrong, it was great, but come on Carly, you're going to have to do better than that. Also, I have to wonder what her mother, who was visiting from Ireland, REALLY thinks about Carly's husband, who has tattoo's all over his face and (assuming) body. No surprise you never see him in the audience, he'd scare the little girls who vote.
  3. Amanda Overmyer - Honestly, I struggled with who was really number 3. I'm not really sure what to make of Amanda. She's a fellow Hoosier, and she almost died in a car wreck in my home town. So, I find myself voting for her just out of novelty, but I'm just not sure what her long term prospects are. She sang Joan Jett's version of "I Hate Myself for Loving You" well, and it certainly wasn't as mimicy as the others. However, her stage presence, even on this little stage, is so minuscule, I worry that she is going to swallowed up by the giant stage debuting next week (if she makes it). She never looks at the camera, and she is too aloof to crack a smile even when Simon practically licks her in approval. She needs to work on that because she's not naturally going to attract the speed dialing little girls. With that being said, her fiancee is HAWT! I rarely see dudes like that in Indy.
The Meh-iddle - (no particular order)
  • Kristy Lee Cook - Carrie Underwood, Jr was pretty good last night coutryfyingy Foreigner's "Faithfully." I actually could hear it on the radio. Her problem is, as Simon said, she is completely forgettable. The fact that I had to go look at two other recaps to actually remember the name of the song she sang, does not bode well for her. However, the thing she does have going for her is that she's absolutely gorgeous, which will help with male and lesbian voters. She is just like a soul sucking chupacabra, but hey, Carrie Underwood has made millions being a vapid singer, too.
  • Syesha Mercado - Syesha has the pipes to take on Whitney's "Saving All My Love", but unfortunately, she does not have the subtlety. She literally screams the high notes into the mike, and frankly, it wears me out. The arrangement was also pretty weird. It was like she sang the chorus over and over. She could be in the bottom 2 tonight. It is just a hunch.
  • Asia'h Epperson - Asia'h, Asia'h, Asia'h, you are a great performer within your limited range, but you should never ever pick a Whitney song again. Not to mention "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" is one of the most overused songs on Idol, I just have to wonder what Whitney has done to deserve both Bobby Brown and Idol butcherings. Ah well, that being said, Asia'h did a pretty good job on the song, except when she had to go outside of her range. She's going to be one of those that is considered more a performer than a singer, which is not neccisarily a bad thing. Plus, she too is gorgeous, and I have a feeling the producers will want to keep her around just for the storyline of losing her dad. Crass, yes, but come on, you know I'm right.
The Bottom 2 - (These are my opinion -- not necessarily a prediction)
  1. Kady Malloy - Confession, I have never in my life heard the song she picked, which was "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen. At first, I thought it was some weird riff on "Somewhere" from West Side Story. On top of that, dawg, it was bad. I don't know what Randy was smoking, but it was just terrible. She couldn't hit the high notes, and it was just so vacant. She's a goner. We'll never get to hear her sing Britney now.
  2. Ramiele Malubay - Along with most of the oeuvre of Whitney, I really think "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins needs to be retired from the Idol pantheon. God, I hate, hate, hate the song. On top of that, Ramiele just couldn't sing it. I really think she could blossom into a good singer, but Randy hit this one on the nose, you could absolutely see every firing of the synapses in her brain while she was singing it. It was just inert. I don't think she's necessarily going home, because I think she has a fan base. She just needs to start bringing it.
Well, there you have it. What are your predictions for who's going home?

Wednesday, March 5th - American Idol Recap - The Guys (second post)

As promised, I am doing a puffery piece to offset my political wonkiness from the first post of the day.

First, a moment of AI Zen:

I'm filing this under "If strippers in Indy looked like this, I would go to that ugly troll farm, The Unicorn, more often."

Anyway, here are my thoughts, keeping in mind I fast forwarded through the performances if they bored me, and some of it was in Picture-in-a-Picture while I watched the election returns:

Top 3 - Davids-a-poppin!
  1. David Cook - I never really thought I would say "Hello" by Lionel Richie rocks, but this rendition certainly did. Now, if he'd only get rid of his jank hair, he would actually be someone I could root for (yes, all about vocal ability, right?)
  2. David Archuleta - Phil Collins...seriously? The sad thing about all this is the fact that he is 17, which means he wasn't even born in the 80s. Ugh. Anyway, yes, he sang it well, but he's just so damned earnest. Unlike Paula, who wants to pop off his head and hang him from her rearview mirror, I kinda want to kick him into a mud puddle so he gets dirty. I texted Blanche and said that his song choice was going to annoy me for the next 13 weeks, but since that would put him into the finals, I suppose he's getting my approval.
  3. David Hernandez (pictured) - Obviously, I would be okay if he didn't sing and just sat in my living room for a few hours (or forever), but he actually is a pretty good singer. He has some tics when he sings that really need to be smacked out of him (pick me, pick me!), but I think he has a place in the Top 12. HOWEVER, I have this sick feeling that he might be a surprise ejection (ha!). He was good, but it wasn't exactly memorable (not to mention the Celine song was from 1996), and since Simon was so evil to some of the bad/cute/Sanjayas, they're going to get that annoying, little girl, sympathy vote.
The Meh-iddle
  • Jason Castro - The boy is beautiful, despite the horrible dreadlocks. Though I have to think that if he lost the dreads, he would look pretty fem. I was pretty shocked when Michael Slezak on Entertainment Weekly said that this was one of those iconic Idol moments that will be talked about for years. It was pretty "meh" for me, which has everything to do with the fact that I think "Hallelujah" is a treacly, overused mess which will forever be associated with the two hours of my life that I will never get back from Shrek.
  • Chikezie - I really have nothing against the guy, but his singing is just a bit overwrought. Plus, this is the third week of the contest, and he is already recycling the song he auditioned with?
  • Michael Johns - Most of my friends are gaga over him, and while I love his speaking voice, his singing is just "okay." His rendition of "Don't You Forget About Me" from The Breakfast Club, was basically karaoke. He'll be around because he's older and cute, which will get the MILF vote.
My Bottom Two - (These are my opinion -- not necessarily a prediction)
  1. Danny Noriega - He's so annoyingly gay, and frankly, he is more feminine than Kristy Lee Cook. I have no issue with fem guys, other than it irritates me that many of bigots in this world consider all gay men to be like that. He can sing pretty well, but his song choice leaves a lot to be desire. Add that to the finger snapping, neck cocking, BIG GAY ATTITUDE and I frankly want to send him off to live on a desert island with the big lesbian parrot from Project Runway (that would be Christian).
  2. Luke Menard - Sorry, fellow Hoosier. You are quite hot until you attempt to speak or sing, but that is not enough for you to get through. Your song choice is ghastly, and I really question whether you have testicles considering some of the high notes. If I muted Danny, I would think he was a girl. If I shut my eyes, you sound like Dinah Shore without the chicken.
With all that being said, I'm not sure either of these two will get voted off. Danny has the girl vote, Luke has the sympathy for the maligned vote. So, it really could be a toss up. Luke could obviously be the Haley Scarnato of this season....if only he took off more clothes WITH David Hernandez, it would be a happy season for me. If David H gets voted off, I'm going to be severely annoyed, but I suppose I will survive. Maybe he'll go on a stripping tour....

I'll talk about the ladies tomorrow...
