Tuesday, December 30th - Children of the Corncobs

I'm frantically cleaning my pit of an apartment today, but I thought I'd give you this.  Only in Indiana...

DELPHI, Ind. — Firefighters expect a 17,000-ton mountain of corncobs that caught fire over the weekend near Delphi to keep smoldering for days.

Flames were spotted early Saturday coming from the 10-story-tall pile at The Andersons cob mill and grain operations. Carroll County emergency management director Dave McDowell says while rainfall Saturday night put out the worst of the fire, crews continued to battle hot spots.

McDowell said that seven fire departments responded with more than 150 firefighters to the scene Saturday.

A cause wasn’t immediately known for the fire at the site about 20 miles northeast of Lafayette. The corncobs are processed at the mill into animal feed, bedding and other uses.
