And don't worry, I'm not getting away from my political entries or general musings, I'll still be doing those! As I approach my 200th (!) entry, I am pretty surprised with just how much I have to say.
As a whole, the girls were not as good as the guys this week. There was just an overall "blah" feeling during the whole hour, with too many ballads or renditions of songs that would make a karaoke bar erupt with clapping and pearl clutching but are not worthy of American Idol. It is surprising that in the 7th season of Idol the contestants STILL don't get that you win points for making the song your own. It's like the idiots who get on Survivor but still do not know how to make fire. If I knew I were going on that show, you can bet I'd be contacting a local survivalist to show me how to make fire out of water. It is just amazing that we've become a culture that wants its 15 minutes of fame on TV and the kids today watch vociferously, but then when they finally get the chance they blow it by trying to impersonate the singer who made the song famous.
Anyway, off the soapbox! Oh, also, the judges seemed to be on crack last night. I guess Paula must have brought extra to share.
Top 3
- Brook White - Trust me, I'm more surprised than you that she was number 1 last night. I kind of feel the same way about her as I do David Archuleta. She, of the "never seen a rated R movie," is just so damn earnest. I sort of want her to get to Hollywood and have some sort of lesbian sex scandal. Also, she looks like she's 44 not 24, but hey, it must be hard living the pious life. When Ryan announced she was singing Pat Benatar, I almost hissed at the TV. There's just no way she could sing the song like Pat, and she didn't, which is why the song worked so well. Just like David Cook on Tuesday, she's smart enough to make the song work for her and her vocal stylings. It was pretty fantastic. I cannot say she has the chutzpah to win it all, but she gets points from me for originality.
- Carly Smithson - Her rendition of Celine Dion singing Cyndi Lauper's "I Drove All Night" was actually the best vocal of the night, but the reason Brook beat her out was because there was absolutely nothing original about the performance. Don't get me wrong, it was great, but come on Carly, you're going to have to do better than that. Also, I have to wonder what her mother, who was visiting from Ireland, REALLY thinks about Carly's husband, who has tattoo's all over his face and (assuming) body. No surprise you never see him in the audience, he'd scare the little girls who vote.
- Amanda Overmyer - Honestly, I struggled with who was really number 3. I'm not really sure what to make of Amanda. She's a fellow Hoosier, and she almost died in a car wreck in my home town. So, I find myself voting for her just out of novelty, but I'm just not sure what her long term prospects are. She sang Joan Jett's version of "I Hate Myself for Loving You" well, and it certainly wasn't as mimicy as the others. However, her stage presence, even on this little stage, is so minuscule, I worry that she is going to swallowed up by the giant stage debuting next week (if she makes it). She never looks at the camera, and she is too aloof to crack a smile even when Simon practically licks her in approval. She needs to work on that because she's not naturally going to attract the speed dialing little girls. With that being said, her fiancee is HAWT! I rarely see dudes like that in Indy.
- Kristy Lee Cook - Carrie Underwood, Jr was pretty good last night coutryfyingy Foreigner's "Faithfully." I actually could hear it on the radio. Her problem is, as Simon said, she is completely forgettable. The fact that I had to go look at two other recaps to actually remember the name of the song she sang, does not bode well for her. However, the thing she does have going for her is that she's absolutely gorgeous, which will help with male and lesbian voters. She is just like a soul sucking chupacabra, but hey, Carrie Underwood has made millions being a vapid singer, too.
- Syesha Mercado - Syesha has the pipes to take on Whitney's "Saving All My Love", but unfortunately, she does not have the subtlety. She literally screams the high notes into the mike, and frankly, it wears me out. The arrangement was also pretty weird. It was like she sang the chorus over and over. She could be in the bottom 2 tonight. It is just a hunch.
- Asia'h Epperson - Asia'h, Asia'h, Asia'h, you are a great performer within your limited range, but you should never ever pick a Whitney song again. Not to mention "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" is one of the most overused songs on Idol, I just have to wonder what Whitney has done to deserve both Bobby Brown and Idol butcherings. Ah well, that being said, Asia'h did a pretty good job on the song, except when she had to go outside of her range. She's going to be one of those that is considered more a performer than a singer, which is not neccisarily a bad thing. Plus, she too is gorgeous, and I have a feeling the producers will want to keep her around just for the storyline of losing her dad. Crass, yes, but come on, you know I'm right.
- Kady Malloy - Confession, I have never in my life heard the song she picked, which was "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen. At first, I thought it was some weird riff on "Somewhere" from West Side Story. On top of that, dawg, it was bad. I don't know what Randy was smoking, but it was just terrible. She couldn't hit the high notes, and it was just so vacant. She's a goner. We'll never get to hear her sing Britney now.
- Ramiele Malubay - Along with most of the oeuvre of Whitney, I really think "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins needs to be retired from the Idol pantheon. God, I hate, hate, hate the song. On top of that, Ramiele just couldn't sing it. I really think she could blossom into a good singer, but Randy hit this one on the nose, you could absolutely see every firing of the synapses in her brain while she was singing it. It was just inert. I don't think she's necessarily going home, because I think she has a fan base. She just needs to start bringing it.
