Even after vegging on the couch for most of the late afternoon and evening yesterday, I am still the walking dead from the events of the weekend. I am taking the opportunity to work from home, which basically means, three hours of major report work, and then settling in on the couch for Montel, Dr. Phil, and Oprah. Okay, probably not, but frankly, I do not see how people actually work from home. The couch is too much of a vile mistress.
On Friday we had our fundraiser, and while I certainly think some things could have gone better, all in all, it was an extreme improvement over last year. The swing dancing idea seemed to be universally liked, and I am pretty sure this could end up being the theme for a while. I was more than happy to take credit for the idea, though I didn't have much more to do with it beyond just organization and idea stuff. However, it was important for me to grab what I could just to help with my hope of transitioning to a new position. Also, I am always a little nervous when I invite my friends to things, because I want to make sure they have a good time, and after last year's version, well, there was pretty much no fun to be had. After the fiasco with our dinner (terrible service), I am pretty sure they enjoyed the event, and they participated in the silent auction, too. Thankfully, my parent's didn't embarrass me too much either.
I ended up cutting out of the event a little early because Blanche and I were getting up before the ass crack of dawn on Saturday to go to the Indiana State Marching Band finals. We were both marching band geeks in high school, and since my high school has made it to state for 26 years straight, I have kept up with them since graduating. Blanche and I have gone to the finals a few times, but as we get older and more decrepit, it is getting harder and harder to sit through the 40 bands in four different classes. Of course, we have to sit on the second level so we can see the formations, but the second level seats are basically bleachers with backs. Very very uncomfortable. We went last year because my high school moved down into the class that his high school was in, and this year, since it is the last year in the RCA Dome, we decided to do it again for nostalgia. It was actually a pretty fun day, though by the end, 16 hours later, I was ready for a cocktail!
Afterwards, we met up with HR at Greg's, and I was surprised at how crowded it got. The big night for Greg's is traditionally Friday, and while it wasn't as packed as that night, it was still pretty crowded. I am not sure if it had anything to do with the surprise porn star performing, but it was a pretty good time. We were all pretty trashed, too, which always helps.
I slept in late on Sunday, but then I met up with Blanche and HR again to go shopping for Halloween. I needed to get a wig for my Sweeney Todd, and I needed to figure out what I was going to do for my wizard. After an quickly aborted trip to the Goodwill Outlet, where you buy stuff by the pound, we hit a few Halloween shops and another Goodwill. As Blanche said, after the Outlet, an actual Goodwill seemed like Neiman Marcus. Blanche was having trouble finding a prom dress for his Skaraokee number (more on that in a few days), and I offered to call my mother to see if she still had my sister's prom dresses, which of course, she did. I bent the truth a little to tell her that it was for Mom's cousin, who wanted to go as a pregnant prom princess, but I really couldn't tell her it was for Blanche to do drag. She probably would have had a coronary. So, it is not a lie per se...it is looking out for my Mother's well being. The odd thing is that the dress is a size 14, which is exactly the size Blanche needed. Kinda weird, and it is going to be hilarious to see him performing in it.
After I got home, I laid down on the couch and I was dead to the world for a good two and a half hours. During that time, there was a power outage in my area, and since I live so close to work, they had some issues and ended up calling me. I slept right through it. Thankfully, when I groggily realized what was going on, they had everything back up and running. I really didn't want to have to go back into work. I pretty much just laid on the couch the rest of the day, and I had that feeling that I was coming down with a cold. Thankfully, I think it was just exhaustion...though I still feel like I could sleep for another few hours. Wait, I think that is exactly what I will do.
