Friday, October 24th - Just Trying To Survive the Weekend

When I talk about October being the Gay High Holy month, I am really talking about this weekend. Sure, Halloween is actually next Friday, but in Indianapolis, at least for those of us active in Indy Pride, the weekend of the Bag Lady Bus Tour is really the event of the month.

Tonight, The Wonderful Wizard of Gayville and his partner, put on their annual Halloween party, which is so crowded, they've actually started charging a cover which goes to charity. It is really one of those things that you're fond of in retrospect, but when you're actually at the party, you get extremely tired of getting stepped on. This year, Mom, Blanche, Maestro, Romeo, and I are all dressing up as The Munsters (Eddie, Lilly, Grandpa, Marilyn, and Herman, respectively), and it should be fun, though I have to admit I'm not really looking forward to the green face paint. Blanche and I will be getting ready first and heading down to a friends birthday party before meeting up with the rest to go to the party. It should be a fun time, and if the rain holds off tonight, it will make easy access to Greg's, which seems like forever since I've been there on a Friday night.

The main event is Saturday, and that is the Bag Lady Bus Tour. This year is going to be like a who's who of my blog roll. Along with the usual suspects of Mom, Blanche, Romeo/Halle Pino, and Maestro (though he is not actually going on the bus...he'll be a groupie), Athena will be taking her inaugural voyage on the drunk bus, and in a case of "wow, it is a freaking small world," The [Cherry] Ride is coming down from Chicago with some friends of mine who moved up there a few years ago. It will be weird to meet him for the first time on an occasion such as this, but if he survives the tour, he'll be a stronger man for it. Plus, he might actually blog about it!

Anyway, the tour is in its 28th year, and it is actually a fundraising endeavor. Basically, two and a half buses of campy drag queens (newbies for Halloween and experienced Bag Ladies) and people like me who are just wearing a costume travel around to most of the gay establishments in town to raise money for the Gregory Powers DEFA Fund, which gives emergency support to those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. All of the places we visit have actually paid for the honor of our presence, and frankly, after two years on the bus, I wonder why they ask us back. It is always a hot drunken mess, but since it is one of the longest running HIV/AIDS charity events in the country, I guess a few liberties can be taken.

All I know is that I've been crazy busy the past couple of days getting costumes together and stuff ready for the party and the bus (260 chocolate liquor balls and 378 jello shots so far), and I am frankly looking very forward to Sunday!

Wish me luck!

Thursday, September 25th - <---- Already?

I can't believe it's Thursday already, and I doubly can't believe it is September 25th.  It was downright chilly this morning, and I am SO not ready for winter.  Ugh!

This week has been rather uneventful but eventful.  I've been trying to be a good boy because I am almost done with my course of antibotic for the creeping crud that I had for a week and a half, but the best laid plans do not always work out that way.

I met up with Mom and the boys (plus Athena and Mom's best friend going back to the high school days) at the brand new Adobo Grill and Tequila Bar in downtown Indy.  We had eaten at the old Adobo location on the north side for Dining Out for Life way back in April, and Mom wanted to bask in the glow of tequila for her birthday, or at least she talks a big game, because she didn't have any tequila until I bought her a shot right before we left.  Anyway, the new decor of the new restaurant is fantastic.  It used to be a bank, so it has a high ornate ceiling and it just very cool on the inside.  The menu is expanded, at least in respect to a very large ceviche bar, which is not something I would generally eat.  Ceviche is basically seafood that has been "cooked" in the acidity of either lemons or limes.  Hmmm...that's a bit out of my comfort zone, but I *think* I might be willing to try it at some point.  Except the octopus....seriously...  It was a good meal, but I worry about it's continued existence because it was pretty dead for a new restaurant on a Tuesday night.  It is in a section of downtown that is starting to see more restaurant activity (Fogo de Chao opened a couple months ago across the street), but with winter coming and no real parking close by, I just hope it survives.  We need a good Mexican place downtown!

After doing the usual karaoke and a quick stop off at Greg's with Romeo.  I went home, watched a little TV, sent off a few drunken texts, and then went to bed.  Wednesday wasn't really a big day at work.  I got a lot done, and I had planned on going home, hitting the gym, and then enjoying my evening of guilty pleasure reality TV (America's Next Top Model, Project Runway, and Top Design), but after collapsing in a heap on the couch and justifying my not going to the gym because I'm still ill *cough*, I get a text from Sequoia seeing what I was up to for dinner.  Since I was staring at the prospect of making turkey burgers, I decided to peel myself of the couch and meet him at Olly's, which of course, lead to a relatively long night of drinking with the Pride Mafia.  It is actually kind of odd being with these new people, because I have known most of my friends for a very long time, and I do not really have to go through the whole explanation of how I got to where I am at this point in my life.  It's almost like dating, but I guess it is nice that people give a damn.  Plus, I'm never going to get anywhere in the organization if I remain an enigma who goes to meetings and drinks with people. It is good for me because I tend to fade into the background like an aloof sphinx in group situations, especially when my friends are not around.  So, I guess even at 33 there is some growth to be had out there...

Anyway, cutting the philosophical crap, because I was drunk, too.  I'm sure Oprah would enjoy that sort of self-discovery.  I came home, watched ANTM and Runway, drunk text again, and then I went to bed.

Hmmm...seeing a pattern here...
