Monday, January 28, 2008 - Monday Morning Wake-up Call

It is Monday, which is week 5 of my 2008 fitness goal, and the bad part is I woke up with a sinus infection and a sore throat. So, I did not get to the gym this morning. I'm not at all thrilled about that, but since I had been doing Monday, Thursday, and Saturday. Maybe my body is telling me to switch to Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. We'll see.

Since I am feeling surly today, I am going to do something that will probably make me hated amongst all you nibblers out there. We are in the middle of that yearly trudge. You know what I am talking about. The SIEGE of the Girl Scout Cookie. I think everyone thinks because they are small cookies, you can eat a whole sleeve (or a box), and it will not really matter to your waistline. Plus, it's for a good cause...so what's the harm?

Ha!

There are actually two different companies that produce these little cookies of death, and I suppose it depends on what region of the country you're in for which ones you get. There are indeed differences in the cookies and the nutritional information depending on which company made them. For instance from this Calorie Lab article, ABC Bakers, while taking out the trans fats from Thin Mints, have upped the saturated fat and sugar. On the other hand, Little Brownie Bakers actually make Thin Mints in much smaller sizes so it appears that they are healthier. However, since they're smaller, you're probably going to eat more.

The following are the nutritional facts from ABC Bakers (you can click for bigger versions):

Samoas/Carmel deLites:

Thin Mints:

Do-Si-Dos/Peanut Butter Sandwich

Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties:

Trefoils/Shortbread:

Thanks-A-Lots/All Abouts:

Lemonades:

Cinna-Spins: Girl Scout Cookies Answer to the 100 Calorie Pack

There you have it. Obviously, the serving size is so small, that they do not look that terrible at first glance. However, how often do you eat just two? Plus, while there is less that .5% Trans Fats in them so they can report 0, what is the cumulative of eating a whole pack?

I know, I know. You're thinking I'm a major kill joy, but these things add up. Sure, if this is your only splurge and you keep it to an acceptable portion size, then you're not really being that bad. But, when I see you purchased 10 boxes of cookies, I'm going to assume you aren't eating two at a time.

Ahhh, I feel less surly!

You are a brat! I did by cookies to help support a local girl scout, now I just want to yell at her!! I will now have to take my "cookies of death" and give them away...after I have two of each package. LOL!

I was going to buy a box of girl scout cookies, eat 2, and send the rest to you. But I think it has been scientifically proven that it is impossible to eat less than the entire box in one sitting.

I am going to try to avoid girl schout cookies this year. Since in years past the only reason I got them was because someone in the office's daughter was selling them, now that I work alone in my own office, I should be able to pull it off.

Well I bought some to shut the girl up. She is a flute player so you jknow how bad it can be. I bought Thin Mints and since I don't like Chocolate or mints I am fine. Also I will just leave them open for 10 minutes in my office and they will be gone.

I bought some but they are safely stored in my Mom's freezer 150 miles away. I am hoping that someone there finds them and eats them before I get back ... Otherwise I may have to walk the 150 miles back to Indy to burn off the calories from the boxes.

Party pooper!

I started reading the facts and then decided to ignore what you posted because when you eat cookies for a good cause you don't intake all of the calories. Think of it in terms of making a charitable donation and then taking a tax deduction...except this time you get to deduct the calories.

Makes sense to me.
