TV Roundup

I actually started this yesterday, and since I didn't get it done, I want to finish it up and get it out the door.  I may post again today, because I have a pooh story to share.

Anyway, what I want to talk about is TV. Anyone who read this blog before knows that I am a massive TV junky, and while I could sit and lament my dearly departed Battlestar Galactica, I want to talk about a couple shows in the here and now.

Heroes
I, like most everyone else, had all but given up on this show.  It hasn't really been all that great since the first season, and I suppose I was just watching out of habit.  Behind the scenes, part of the reason it sucked so bad is because Brian Fuller (pictured), the writer of one of the best episodes from the first season, Company Man, left to create the dearly departed, Pushing Daisies, but now that Pushing Daisies is, well, pushing daisies, he is back.  While you could feel the effects of Heroes finally having a creative path earlier in the season, the first episode that he wrote was, Cold Snap, and it was evident just how much he gets these characters.  Each episode since then has been pretty much tremendous, with the caste finally being wound down to the characters we have invested the most into since the beginning.  Frankly, this past Monday's episode, 1961, was one of the best hours of television I have seen this season, which is saying a lot. Cristine Rose, who plays matriarch Angela Patrelli, is seriously giving Emmy worthy performances, and the flashbacks to a prior holocaust were similarly arresting.  I know it is hard to go back to a show you have given up on, but if you liked Heroes at the beginning, I encourage you to catch up with the latter half of this season.

Saving Grace
With Damages, The Closer, Saving Grace, In Plain Sight, and the upcoming Hawthorne, we have had an embarrassment of riches with strong, mature female charcters on TV.  With Glenn Close, Kyra Sedgwick, Holly Hunter, Mary McCormack, and Jada Pinkett Smith all on TV, I think the Emmys are going to be pretty interesting this year.  In particular, I would like to give a shout out to Holly Hunter, especially after watching Monday night's episode.  It was an amazing hour of television culminating in the ending of the death row storyline of Leon Cooley.  It was the spring finally of the series, and I have to say it was the probably the best hour that they have produced.  A lot of Saving Grace is about shock value, from the way Grace lives her life to really just pushing the envelope of what you can do on broadcast television, which, frankly, sometimes gets to a point of being "look at me" obnoxious, but this was taught hour of drama that just felt different, and it has be looking forward to a new direction for Grace.  I'm going to say it now, Holly Hunter deserves the Emmy.  On that note, Bokeem Woodbine, who played Leon Cooley, deserves absolute credit, too.  The downward spiral he portrayed as Cooley realized his time was up, was so authentic.  It really took my breath away.

Other Shows That Are Doing Exceptionally
  • Grey's Anatomy -  It is FINALLY good again
  • LOST - It has jumped off into the Sci-Fi deep end, but I love Sci-Fi
  • Dollhouse - It was a rocky start, but it has really been awesome the past few weeks.  I'm afraid it might not be enough to keep it around though.
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - I'm finally catching up with this, but too bad, it was just canceled!
  • Chuck - It has been good this season, but I'm afraid for its future.
  • Gossip Girl - The second half of the season has not been as good as the first half, but I still love it.  I've been frustrated with the scheduling though.  There have been too many lengthy breaks between new episodes.
  • Survivor - I usually end up losing interest half way through the season, but Survivor has been really great this time around.  There are good characters in it, and frankly, Brenden (pictured) is gorgeous. :)
Shows I Have Given Up On
  • Brothers & Sisters - I know.  I'm going to get slapped for this, but as much as I love Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths, I just lost interest in all the drama.  I guess there is a point where there is too much for a series to handle.
  • Ugly Betty - It just got to a point where I had better things to watch on Thursdays.
What do you, three readers, think about this TV season?

I watch 30 Rock, The Office, South Park, Kath & Kim, Dollhouse, Bros & Sis's (so my folks and I have something to talk about), Desperate Housewives (at work because it doesn't take much attention) and a slough of others.
Favorite reality shows are Bad Girls' Club, I Love Money, and now Pretty Wicked.
Can't wait for Mad Men to come back.

Was Terminator canceled? I thought that it was just the end of the season... :(

It hasn't been officially canceled, but Ausiello on Entrainment Weekly said that all signs point to it, even if Fox "hasn't decided" yet. It sucks! The episode that took place in the submarine was fantastic!
