Since I have been getting up before work to go to the gym, I have been going to bed early (well, early for me), and since I thought there wasn't really anything on TV Monday evening (I refuse to watch Superstars of Dance), I decided to keep the new Desperate Housewives to watch last night. At the time, I didn't realize that there was a new Gossip Girl on, and since I hadn't watched DH by 8:30, I decided to go ahead and watch Gossip Girl first.
This brought to a light a pretty interesting point for me. Whereas Housewives used to be my source for soapy fun on TV, Gossip Girl has completely supplanted it on almost every level. Sure, some people scoff that this is just another teen show because it is set in high school, albeit no high school that any of us have ever attended. The fact is that if you were to take the guts of the story and transplant it to any other environment, it would STILL be the heir apparent to the soap crown, the likes we haven't seen since the zenith of Dynasty, Dallas, and Falcon Crest.
Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoy Housewives, even though Lynette, who has always been my favorite, cannot seem to get a story line greater than the "lioness protecting her cubs." I am also happy that they are finally working the token gay couple (now two of them, natch) into the mix, and the scene when Gaby is laughing out loud listening to Susan talk to Bob is one of the funnier scenes they've had in a while. I just think watching Housewives directly after another great Gossip Girl just brought all of this into focus for me.
If you've been downgrading Gossip Girl because of the source material, you really are missing out. Give it a try...

I've never watched Gossip Girl...may have to give it a try.
I was thinking about it again this morning, and another reason Gossip Girl is better is because nearly all the characters interact at some point. On the most recent DH, the only time the leads intersected was the one scene with Gabi and Susan, the rest of the stories might as well be their own show.
Anyway, you should check it out. I'm not sure what it would be like to pick it up now, but if you get a lay of the land on a website somewhere, you may get up to speed enough to enjoy it. If not, just enjoy the performances. I know I do :)
