Friday, October 24th - Just Trying To Survive the Weekend

When I talk about October being the Gay High Holy month, I am really talking about this weekend. Sure, Halloween is actually next Friday, but in Indianapolis, at least for those of us active in Indy Pride, the weekend of the Bag Lady Bus Tour is really the event of the month.

Tonight, The Wonderful Wizard of Gayville and his partner, put on their annual Halloween party, which is so crowded, they've actually started charging a cover which goes to charity. It is really one of those things that you're fond of in retrospect, but when you're actually at the party, you get extremely tired of getting stepped on. This year, Mom, Blanche, Maestro, Romeo, and I are all dressing up as The Munsters (Eddie, Lilly, Grandpa, Marilyn, and Herman, respectively), and it should be fun, though I have to admit I'm not really looking forward to the green face paint. Blanche and I will be getting ready first and heading down to a friends birthday party before meeting up with the rest to go to the party. It should be a fun time, and if the rain holds off tonight, it will make easy access to Greg's, which seems like forever since I've been there on a Friday night.

The main event is Saturday, and that is the Bag Lady Bus Tour. This year is going to be like a who's who of my blog roll. Along with the usual suspects of Mom, Blanche, Romeo/Halle Pino, and Maestro (though he is not actually going on the bus...he'll be a groupie), Athena will be taking her inaugural voyage on the drunk bus, and in a case of "wow, it is a freaking small world," The [Cherry] Ride is coming down from Chicago with some friends of mine who moved up there a few years ago. It will be weird to meet him for the first time on an occasion such as this, but if he survives the tour, he'll be a stronger man for it. Plus, he might actually blog about it!

Anyway, the tour is in its 28th year, and it is actually a fundraising endeavor. Basically, two and a half buses of campy drag queens (newbies for Halloween and experienced Bag Ladies) and people like me who are just wearing a costume travel around to most of the gay establishments in town to raise money for the Gregory Powers DEFA Fund, which gives emergency support to those afflicted with HIV/AIDS. All of the places we visit have actually paid for the honor of our presence, and frankly, after two years on the bus, I wonder why they ask us back. It is always a hot drunken mess, but since it is one of the longest running HIV/AIDS charity events in the country, I guess a few liberties can be taken.

All I know is that I've been crazy busy the past couple of days getting costumes together and stuff ready for the party and the bus (260 chocolate liquor balls and 378 jello shots so far), and I am frankly looking very forward to Sunday!

Wish me luck!

I'm already tired just from reading about your plans! So, what are those chocolate ball things?

They're basically a rum ball recipe, but I used Godiva liquer and Bailey's this time.

The rest of the ingredients are chocolate, powdered suger, corn syrup, and vanilla wafer crumbs. They're good!
