November 12, 2007 - RIP *sniff* (second post)

Today I canceled my FatCow hosting account to a website I maintained for many many years in various forms. The final iteration was called Awards Avenue, and it was basically a way for me to catalog all the various awards shows out there. I'm not really sure how I started down this road, but I certainly got a lot of mileage out of it.

It is kind of sad because it was the ultimate embodiment of my very first website, Binky's Movie Hut, which was really a place for me to list all my favorite movies and why, and it is where I wrote my first reviews of movies. This is also where I started learning about designing websites, and while I will never be a master of this domain, I know enough to be dangerous. The original website went up back in 1995 or there abouts, while I was still in college, and it was even funnier when I let the Binky domain name go to launch Awards Avenue, only to discover that it had become a porn site. The best part about all of that is one of my High School friends notifying me of this after they clicked on my bio at the schools website. So, I inadvertently broke the law by having the school link to porn.

At my highest point, Sasha Stone the proprietor of OscarWatch, which has since morphed into Awards Daily, used my Oscar Calendar O' Obsession as the basis for her own Oscar calendar, and for those that do not think this is a big deal, well, it would be like being mentioned on a Perez Hilton sized blog only for the movie nerd set. I just happened to look at her Calendar again, and she says thank you to Awards Avenue, The Envelope (LA Times), and The Hollywood Reporter - that is high company. With this exposure, I was getting close to a million hits a year, which is small potatoes for big media sites, but for a movie buff based far from Hollywood, this was a pretty big accomplishment. I was considered legitimate press for things. I would actually get contacted by PR firms wanting to exposure for the Oscar eligibles, and one year, the publicist from Stella McCartney actually wanted me to provide them information on all the awards shows so they could make sure to contact front runners so they could wear their gowns. Oh, and I got invited to Missy Eliot's pre-MTV Video Music Awards show in Miami. Talk about WEIRD!

Anyway, last year kind of broke me a little because it has gotten to be so competitive. Plus, when OscarWatch became Awards Daily, they kind of stole a lot of my thunder, and since I was never going to be able to devote the time to it to make it a money making proposition, I decided about the time I started this blog, that it was time to put that chapter of my life to bed. More than likely, you are going to see pieces of my old self pop up when we get further into awards season. November and December are really given over to the critics Top 10 list, but once we get around to the Golden Globes, SAGs, and Oscar's, etc. I am sure I will blog on it...

Rambled enough about this, but RIP Awards Avenue!

How was that Missy Elliot party?

How many 40 Ounces did you throw back? Did you pour out a little liquor for your dead homies?
