Monday, September 17, 2008 - Weekend Musings and Emmy Aftermath

This was certainly not as jam packed of a weekend as last week, but I am certainly okay with it. I still went out on Friday, had a bad movie party at my place on Saturday, and I went to the Indianapolis Museum of Art with Tyler on Sunday (more on that in a minute). Since I think I've gotten the most visits lately because of my television and Emmy blogs, I will do an Emmy wrap up before getting to my weekend.

I certainly didn't embarrass myself with my predictions for this year's Emmy Awards. As I've said, I find these nominations and awards the most mystifying ones of the pretty much year around awards season. I mean heck, even the Golden Globes do a better job at honoring television, and that is pretty much a group of 80 old fogey foreign correspondents trying to suck up to Hollywood. I certainly did worse in the Comedy sections, though I did predict the upset win of 30 Rock and America Ferrera (though she was pretty much a foregone conclusion in retrospect). I hope the hilarious appearances of Tina Fey presenting, accepting the win, and her American Express commercial gives this show some much needed audience. Granted, I'm not willing to shove Survivor: China (yet) and Ugly Betty (never) off of my Tivo to make room to watch it, but I think Tina Fey is one of the funniest comedy writers we have right now. So, I wish her all the success in the world.

I was absurdly happy to see James Spader win for Best Actor in a Drama Series, even though Boston Legal is as far from a straight drama as Titanic is a comedy. I know not everyone likes this show, and I am even more sure that people are going to point at his win as one of the billions of reasons the Emmy's suck, but I love the show. So, I can't complain. I just wish Candace Bergen had been up there, too. I was thrilled to see Katherine Heigl (HI-GULL) and Sally Field win in Best Supporting and Best Actress in a Drama. Heigl is a superstar in the making, and I just love the fact that she said "SHIT" when they announced her name. Field went a little crazy with her anti-war sentiment, but just like you allow Elaine Stritch to say whatever she damn well likes, Sally Field has earned the right to speak her mind. Plus, they bleeped her saying "End the god dammed war!" Well, she's right. All in all, it was an okay Emmy's. They really do need to come up with a way to represent all of the great shows out there. The spectrum of television has become so broad I truly understand that it is impossible to please everyone when there are 500+ channels, but there has to be a way to recognize the contributions of people like Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell of Battlestar Galactica and countless other actors and shows that are consistently better than half the shows on network TV. It is pretty asinine to think that ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and HBO are the only channels with quality television. Step up, Academy. Our viewing habits have changed, and it is high time you became relevant again!

Whew, okay, enough of that. As I said, the rest of my weekend was pretty fun and relaxing. I was planning on staying in Friday night, but when it looked like all my friends decided to go out, I pulled myself off the couch to go out and meet them. I am glad I did because we had a very good time. When my plan was to stay in on Friday, I had invited everyone over on Saturday to have a bad movie night. Romeo, HR, Blanche, and Mom came over to enjoy the festivities, and we watched Showgirls and Mommy Dearest before playing some Wii with a couple of new friends that Romeo had invited. I really need to get better at telling people to choose blog names. Anyway, I had never seen either of the movies. I know, that is a major gay faux pas, but I felt I had seen enough of Mommy Dearest through all the gay video's that have been shown in bars around Mother's Day and at Showtunes Night at Sidetracks in Chicago. As for Showgirls, I just really didn't have that much of an interest, and wow, I can certainly see why. Quite frankly, I have never seen something so laughably bad in my entire life. I do not know how these "actors" were able to keep a straight face while saying script, and Gina Gershon should be damned grateful that she even has a career. My god, she also needs to learn to actually close her lips. She looks like Butthead's Mom.

On Sunday, Tyler and I continued down the road of reconciliation by going to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. I was excited to go because I had not been since it had been fully open from its expansion. We had a great time! Since he works third shift on Sunday, he needed to go home and go to bed. So, after I left him, I ran by the grocery store and picked up some junk food to enjoy through the evening. I had decided that on Monday (today), I was going to start a new training program at the gym. To that end, I figured it was time to have a junk food binge because I am not going to allow myself to have these types of food for the next 12 weeks. I am also going to limit if not curtail my alcohol consumption, too. Of course, I will have exceptions to the rule: Romeo's Party, Halloween festivities, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but I absolutely need to get back on the wagon with this stuff. I will be posting progress reports, and I will certainly accept any words of encouragement.

OMFG, that is hilarious!! I adore Gina Gershon (she's a girl I'd switch for), but come on! I'm sure the look of utter horror on my face through the enTIRE movie said it all, Darlin'.

p.s. the Wii boys are my gaybors, "Jared" and "RoryJames."
